UPF/UV protection is the foundational technology that makes modern sun-protective clothing possible. It bridges the gap between everyday comfort and essential sun safety.
What Is UPF?
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures how much UV radiation penetrates a fabric to reach the skin. A UPF 50 fabric allows 1/50th (2%) of UV radiation to pass through, blocking 98%. UPF 50+ blocks 98%+ and represents the maximum rating. Unlike SPF (which measures sunscreen protection), UPF measures physical fabric barrier protection that does not need reapplication.
The result is a fabric that provides permanent sun protection that lasts the life of the garment — as long as the fabric structure remains intact.
How It Works: The Three Layers of Protection
Seekingtex UPF technology employs three complementary mechanisms for maximum UV blocking:
- Fiber-Level UV Stabilizers: Special chemical absorbers integrated into the polymer melt before fiber extrusion. These stabilizers absorb UV radiation and convert it to harmless heat energy. Because they are embedded in the fiber itself, not applied as a topical coating, they never wash off.
- Dense Fabric Construction: Tightly woven or knitted structures minimize gaps between yarns where UV radiation can pass through. The tighter the construction, the higher the UPF rating.
- Ceramic Nanoparticles: Advanced formulations include titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles that scatter and reflect UV radiation, adding an additional layer of protection beyond absorption.
Testing & Certification
UPF rating is determined by standardized testing per AS/NZS 4399 or AATCC 183. A spectrophotometer measures UV transmission through the fabric at wavelengths from 290-400 nm. The result is expressed as a UPF rating. Seekingtex fabrics are lab-tested and certified to UPF 50+.

Fibers Used
- Polyester: Naturally higher UPF than other fibers. Easily accepts UV stabilizers during extrusion (1-3% additive by weight).
- Nylon: Lower inherent UV resistance but can achieve UPF 50+ with additive loadings of 2-5%.
- Cotton: Low natural UPF (5-10). Requires heavy additive treatments. Not recommended for sun protection without special processing.
Fiber-Level vs. Topical UV Protection
Topical UV coatings are applied to finished fabric via padding or spraying. They provide UPF 15-30 initially but degrade rapidly with washing and wear. Fiber-level UV stabilizers are incorporated during fiber manufacturing, providing permanent protection that cannot wash off. Seekingtex exclusively uses fiber-level UV technology for all sun protection fabrics.
