Fabric Weight & Thickness Guide

Fabric weight and thickness directly affect drape, durability, opacity, breathability, and end-use suitability. This guide explains the trade-offs so you can choose the right GSM for your garment or application.

Understanding Fabric Weight (GSM)

Fabric weight is measured in grams per square meter (GSM). It is the single most important specification for determining a fabric's end use. Higher GSM fabrics are heavier, thicker, more durable, and less drapeable. Lower GSM fabrics are lighter, thinner, more breathable, and more fluid.

Lightweight (Under 150 GSM) Shirts & Base Layers

  • Durability: Lowest thinner fibers, more prone to wear
  • Drape: Most fluid excellent for soft, flowing garments
  • Opacity: May require lining check coverage in stretch
  • Breathability: Highest ideal for hot-weather wear
  • Best for: Base layers, summer shirts, blouses, activewear linings, scarves

Medium Weight (150 250 GSM) All-Purpose Apparel

  • Durability: Good balanced strength-to-weight ratio
  • Drape: Moderate holds shape while allowing movement
  • Opacity: Good generally opaque without lining
  • Breathability: Moderate suitable for three-season wear
  • Best for: T-shirts, polo shirts, dress shirts, light jackets, casual pants, leggings

Heavyweight (250 350 GSM) Outerwear & Workwear

  • Durability: High substantial fabric with good tear resistance
  • Drape: Stiff holds structure well, limited fluidity
  • Opacity: Excellent fully opaque, suitable for unlined garments
  • Breathability: Lower appropriate for cool-weather wear
  • Best for: Hoodies, sweatpants, work shirts, cargo pants, light jackets, soft shells

Ultra-Heavyweight (350+ GSM) Industrial & Heavy-Duty

  • Durability: Highest maximum tear and abrasion resistance
  • Drape: Minimal very stiff, used where structure matters more than drape
  • Opacity: Complete no light penetration
  • Breathability: Lowest designed for protection, not ventilation
  • Best for: Tactical vests, winter coats, upholstery, heavy workwear, protective gear

Fabric Thickness: A Separate but Related Property

While weight (GSM) and thickness are correlated, they are not the same. A fabric can be lightweight but thick (e.g., fleece) or heavyweight but thin (e.g., dense woven nylon). Thickness is measured in millimeters and affects:

  • Insulation value thicker fabrics trap more air for warmth
  • Compressibility thinner fabrics pack smaller for travel
  • Hand feel thickness contributes to perceived quality
  • Opacity thicker fabrics are generally more opaque

Weight vs. Performance Trade-offs

A common misconception is that heavier always means better. However, fabric performance depends on the specific requirements of the end use:

  • Moisture Wicking: Lighter fabrics (80-150 GSM) wick moisture faster due to lower fiber mass. Heavier fabrics hold more moisture and dry slower.
  • UPF Rating: Heavier, denser fabrics naturally provide higher UV protection. A 200 GSM polyester knit may achieve UPF 50+ while a 120 GSM version of the same construction may only reach UPF 30.
  • Durability: Within the same construction, heavier fabrics are more abrasion resistant and tear resistant. However, construction quality (ripstop, yarn type) matters more than weight alone.
  • Stretch Recovery: Heavier stretch fabrics have more mass to return to shape, often providing better recovery than lightweight stretch fabrics with the same spandex content.
