1. Pre-Qualification: What to Look for in a Textile Factory

Before engaging any manufacturer, verify the following credentials:

Compliance Certificates

• ISO 9001:2015 – Quality management system. If a factory does not have ISO 9001, they almost certainly lack the process controls needed for consistent textile quality.
• OEKO-TEX Standard 100 – For fabrics destined for the European and global market. Verify the certification number and scope.
• bluesign – For brands requiring responsible chemical management and environmental practices in their supply chain.
• BSCI / SMETA / SEDEX – Social compliance audits. Many EU and US buyers now require these as part of their supply chain due diligence.
• REACH / RoHS – Material compliance declarations for chemical substances used in dyeing and finishing.
• GRS (Global Recycled Standard) – For verification of recycled content claims in eco-friendly product lines.

Manufacturing Capabilities

• Circular knitting (single jersey, double jersey, interlock, rib)
• Warp knitting (tricot, raschel)
• Weaving (plain, twill, satin, dobby, jacquard)
• Finishing line (dyeing, drying, heat-setting, compacting)
• Coating / lamination line (PU, PTFE, acrylic, hot-melt)
• In-house testing lab (colorfastness, tensile, tear, shrinkage, UPF, moisture management)

Experience Verification

• Years in functional textile manufacturing (5+ years minimum for serious consideration)

2. Quality Control Protocols

Raw Material Incoming QC

• Yarn count and denier verification (per ASTM D1907 or ISO 2060)
• Tensile strength testing of incoming yarns
• Color consistency of dyed yarns (if applicable)
• Chemical composition verification (fiber blend accuracy)

In-Process QC

• Fabric weight (GSM) monitoring – checked every roll during production
• Width consistency checks against specifications
• Dye shade approval before bulk production continues
• Stitch density and construction verification for knits

Final Inspection (Before Shipment)

• 100% visual inspection under standard lighting – defects, shade variation, contamination
• 4-point system per ASTM D5430 or ISO 9073 for defect grading
• Color consistency check (light box, D65 illuminant, pass/fail per AATCC 173 or CMC tolerance)
• Dimensional stability test (shrinkage per AATCC 135)
• Random sample testing (AQL 2.5 or 4.0 per ISO 2859)

3. Compliance Documentation Checklist

For each fabric, the mill should provide:

• OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificate (valid and matching the fabric type)
• Test report from accredited lab (ISO 17025 certified)
• Material safety data sheets (MSDS) for all finishes and coatings
• REACH compliance declaration
• Bill of Materials with yarn supplier traceability
• Factory inspection report (if third-party audit conducted)
• Certificates of analysis for each production lot

4. MOQ Negotiation

• Combine multiple colors or finishes into a single production run

5. Logistics and Shipping

Common Incoterms

• FOB (Free on Board): Factory delivers to the departure port. Buyer assumes responsibility once goods are on board. Most common for Asian textile manufacturing.
• EXW (Ex Works): Buyer arranges all shipping from the factory door. Cheapest factory price but most buyer responsibility.
• CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight): Factory pays freight and insurance to destination port. Higher price but less risk for buyer.

Shipping Considerations

• Textiles are typically low-weight, medium-volume – volumetric weight (DIM) may apply for bulky knits
• Request rolled on tubes with polybag wrapping to protect from moisture during transit
• Sea freight from China/East Asia to EU: 25 – 35 days; to US West Coast: 15 – 20 days
• For urgent orders, air freight is 4 – 6x more expensive but takes 3 – 7 days

6. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them
